After the Swedish premiere of Sleeping Beauty, the Svenska Dagbladet wrote: "The story that Mats Ek tells is now a fairytale for adults. He has placed Sleeping Beauty into reality." In his ballet, the Swedish choreographer set up situations created by our own times but present in hidden form in the fairytale: generation conflicts, the search for happiness, and deadly perils. Mats Ek summarizes his choreography of Sleeping Beauty: "Here, simple and clear movements grasp the myths and signs of the fairytale as part of a cultural heritage slumbering in our unconscious. For me, the point is to poke holes in and to sabotage what we all take for granted, in order to experience it anew, to take it quite seriously - and thus to pay respect to the fairytale." Mats Ek's choreography of Sleeping Beauty hat its world premiere on June 2, 1996, performed by the Hamburg Ballet (Director: John Neumeier). In 1997, it was put on the schedule of the Cullberg Ballet.
